Where the Music Is

How did we get here^2?

Song writing

I’ve been experimenting with songwriting since 2021. Back then, I was writing a story in English. And although this was not necessary at all, I felt deep in my soul that a moment in that story begs for a musical number. So I wrote one.

My first song was pretty basic. I used the classic Canon progression with “I - V - vi - iii - IV - I - IV - V”.

Then, about a few months later, when I was writing another English story, I decided to write another song. This time, although the chorus still used the Canon progression, the verses were more creative as I experimented with the unusual “i – v – VII – iv”, aka C minor, G minor, B♭ major, F minor. For the bridge, I used the classic progression F major G major A minor A minor F major G major C major C major. If you listened to the piece, you would notice it goes from minor in the verse, to major in the chorus, to minor in the second verse, to major from the chorus to the end. There is even a key change from C major to D major right after the bridge. As you can see, I went all out for this second piece.

It wasn’t until 2025 that I wrote another piece. I called it “Epic Song” as a temporary name, but that name has stuck ever since. It was truly my first real attempt at a good original piece, with a motif throughout. Albeit quite basic, I was happy with it for a while. But then I got tired of the piece. I couldn’t figure out how to give it a proper ending. So right now it’s left unfinished in my drafts.

Not long after, I wrote “Dark Song”, which has stayed and is currently a draft. Its motif closely resembles of Awakening’s chorus.

Yes! Originally Awakening’s chorus was meant to be part of a dark song. But its melody was too good not to use for a battle theme.

Hence, that was how Awakening was born. I had the chorus idea first, then incorporated the fast repeating notes to give it an energetic feel. You can say that just like with the Epic Song, I wrote a piece built around the main melody.

After Awakening (which took 7 months to write the piano version of. Mostly because I’d been busy or procrastinating haha), I thought of another motif. But this motif was special. It sounded very much like myself. So that was how the “Rawsie Motif” idea was born. It would be something that would represent me. I imagined that, wherever I went, if there were a melody radiating from me, it would be this one. It is simply “D - C# - A - A - B - F#“. But for some reason, that melody resonated deeply with me. So I wrote Rawsie Motif (Track #2), revolving around that motif. In the finished piece, the Rawsie motif is the verse part, the part that falls down, almost as an inverse of the Epic Song.

nd that’s where we are now. Somewhere along the way, I went from wanting to play other people’s music to wanting to create my own. I still have so many ideas waiting to be put on paper.

For now though, make sure to drink plenty of water, I’ll be back to practicing.
